MEPCO Slab Rates Explained with Worked Calculation Example

Learn how progressive electricity slab brackets work in Pakistan and follow a step-by-step numerical calculation for a 350-unit domestic connection.

Educational Example Note: This guide provides a conceptual mathematical walkthrough of progressive slab calculations. Rates used in examples are illustrative. Always check live tariff schedules on the official NEPRA portal or test your exact usage on our calculator.

1. What is a Progressive Slab Billing System?

A progressive slab system means electricity per-unit cost increases as consumption increases across tiered brackets. The rationale is to encourage energy conservation and provide low-consumption households with subsidized lifeline tariffs.

2. Worked Calculation Example (350 Units Consumed)

Suppose a Non-Protected domestic connection consumes 350 kWh (units) in a billing month. Here is how the total units are broken down across progressive slab brackets:

Step 1: Bracket Unit Breakdown

Slab 1 (1 to 100 units): 100 units
Slab 2 (101 to 200 units): 100 units
Slab 3 (201 to 300 units): 100 units
Slab 4 (301 to 350 units): 50 units
Total Units Consumed: 350 Units

Step 2: Adding Surcharges & Taxes

After calculating base Variable Energy Charges by multiplying units in each bracket by their per-unit tariff rate:

  • FC Surcharge: Multiplied by total 350 units.
  • FPA Charge: Multiplied by total 350 units.
  • Electricity Duty (ED): Percentage tax applied to Variable Energy Charges.
  • GST (General Sales Tax): Federal sales tax applied to total energy charges & surcharges.
  • PTV Fee: Fixed Rs. 35 added to the final total.
